Royalties go unpaid in Nigeria
Malaysia Sun Tuesday 1st September, 2009
Musicians in Nigeria have asked broadcast DJ’s to observe a no-music day in solidarity with artists who do not get paid royalties.
Lagos contains many radio stations, none of which pay for playing music.
The Nigerian Music Industry Coalition has said the non-payment of royalties has become a big issue in the country, with nightclubs also refusing to pay.
Last week, the group organised a hunger strike by musicians, angered at losing money to piracy.
Popular albums are readily available on Nigeria’s streets, sold by pirates who work for large illegal production networks.
