DAVAO CITY (PIA) - The environmental Non-Government Organization Interface Development Interventions Inc. (IDIS) has called on Dabawenyos to practice and follow a "zero waste lifestyle."
Ruel Kenneth Pelices, IDIS policy advocacy officer, said living a zero waste life is sustainable.
Among these practices include avoiding the use of Styrofoam and tarpaulins, donating leftover food, using plants as souvenirs and providing soft copies or going online for invitation letters instead of using printed materials.
Other green habits include choosing healthy and locally-sourced food, purchasing products sold in bottles, choosing outdoor locations as venues to conserve on energy and using eco-bags instead of plastic bags.
IDIS is also encouraging companies to implement "green events" to attain zero waste status in the city. Among these green business practices include the use of projectors in lieu of tarpaulins and the use of internet to encourage paperless communication.
In terms of policy advancement, IDIS is pushing for city ordinances which ban the use of single-use plastics and balloon and sky lanterns releasing.
according to IDIS Executive Director Chinkie Golle, a study by Greenpeace revealed the Philippines is the third world's worst polluter of the oceans, next to Indonesia and China.
The NGO is currently promoting its advocacy to mark the Zero Waste Month this January. (PIA-11)
