AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy hailed his side's hard-fought 1-0 win away to Chippa United with Usuthu stretching their unbeaten run in the league to nine games.
Tapelo Nyongo stepped up to score the game's decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 56th minute as McCarthy's side held on to the three points at the Sisa Dukasha Stadium.
McCarthy highlighted his team's attitude for clinching a gritty win despite not playing their best football.
"It was one of those days where it wasn't the prettiest," McCarthy said post-match. "Chippa made it really difficult for us to play our usual game that we're accustomed to.
"That's understandable given the situation they find themselves in hovering there at the bottom end of the log.
"We knew these guys were fighting for their lives and are fighting for survival to stay in the PSL and for us it was just about that constant grind.
McCarthy added that he was left frustrated by the condition of the Sisa Dukasha Stadium pitch especially as it went against the PSL trying to expand the brand of local football as a spectacle.
"We just tried to not make the mistakes that we know playing on a pitch like this will cause us. Where we maybe tried to overplay and the pitch wouldn't allow us to do that.
"At times you just have to accept that football is about winning games and sometimes it doesn't have to be pretty.
"The pitch was just horrendous, how it gets approved by the league is beyond me because when I think you have the now-called DStv Premiership which is trying to build something that makes Africa proud.
"it doesn't make sense to have world class stadiums in Port Elizabeth then decide to play games at this stadium."
AmaZulu will be aiming to stretch their unbeaten run when they welcome TTM to Kings Park Stadium on Sunday.
Kick-off is at 15:30.
