Former world No. 1 Andy Murray is the latest big name to exit from the Miami Open, which began Tuesday.
The 33-year-old Brit, a two-time winner in Miami (2009, 2013), withdrew on Tuesday with a left groin injury.
"I had no issues while training, felt fine, did some gym work Friday, no problem," Murray told the Miami Herald. "Then I woke up about 3 in the morning, felt pain in the groin, not on the side I had my surgery, and when I got out of bed I struggled quite a bit to walk. I have no idea what I did. It's one of those freak things. Each day it has gotten progressively better, but it's not enough. I have not practiced since Friday."
Top-ranked Novak Djokovic announced last week that he is skipping the Masters 1000 event due to an abdominal injury. No. 3 Rafael Nadal (back) and No. 6 Roger Federer (knee) are also missing the Miami event due to injuries, while No. 4 Dominic Thiem pulled out to focus on the upcoming clay-court season.
Russian Daniil Medvedev, who moved up to No. 2 earlier this week, is the Miami Open's top seed. The final is slated for April 4.
Murray's place in the draw will be filled by a qualifier or lucky loser.
