The Washington Nationals placed starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg on the 10-day injured list Sunday with inflammation in his right shoulder.
The move is retroactive to April 15.
The club called up right-hander Paolo Espino to start Sunday afternoon's game against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks.
Strasburg, 32, is 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in two starts this season, tallying 11 strikeouts and seven walks in 10 innings.
The three-time All-Star and 2019 World Series Most Valuable Player pitched only five innings in 2020 because of a nerve issue in his wrist.
Strasburg is 112-60 with a 3.21 ERA and 1,708 strikeouts in 243 career starts since Washington drafted him No. 1 overall in 2009.
Sunday marked the first appearance of the season for Espino, 34, who posted a 4.50 ERA in two appearances (one start) with the Nationals in 2020.
Washington also placed right-handed reliever Wander Suero on the injured list with a left oblique strain and recalled right-hander Ryne Harper from the alternate training site in Fredericksburg, Va.
