YANGON, Myanmar - On Tuesday, the jailed Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi could discover the judgment of her incitement trial.
The ousted Myanmar leader is awaiting the verdict of her trial for inciting against the country's military authorities, the first in a series of charges that could see her imprisoned for the rest of her life.
The Nobel Laureate has been imprisoned since the generals deposed her democratically elected government in February, and she will learn her sentence on Tuesday.
According to a local monitoring group, more than 1,200 people have been killed, and over 10,000 have been detained in a crackdown on the opposition.
If convicted guilty of inciting against the military, Suu Kyi faces three years in prison. According to observers, the allegation is one of several intended to eliminate the high-profile figure from politics permanently.
Military authorities have prevented the journalists from attending the proceedings in the special court in Naypyidaw, and her lawyers have been forbidden from speaking to the media.
Immediately after the coup, Suu Kyi was charged with possessing unlicensed walkie-talkies and breaching coronavirus regulations during elections her National League for Democracy (NLD) won in 2020.
The junta has rapidly expanded to its list of charges, including official secrets violations, corruption, and electoral fraud.
The 76-year-old leader has to appear in the junta courtroom on most weekdays, with her legal team claiming that her health was suffering due to her hectic schedule.
