NAYPYITAW, Myanmar - The Myanmar military arrested a prominent business tycoon Khin Shwe and his son Zay Thiha on Monday after they were accused of demolishing historic buildings on rented land owned by Myanmar's defense ministry.
Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun, a military spokesman, confirmed the two men's arrests during a press conference in Naypyitaw on Thursday.
On Monday, military authorities detained employees of an antique museum owned by the 71-year-old tycoon's family, but they were later released. It's unclear how many employees were arrested by the junta or what questions they were asked.
The chairman of the construction firm Zaykabar Company Ltd. and his son are charged with violating Section 24 of Myanmar's 2015 law on the "protection and preservation of ancient monuments," which is intended to protect buildings considered important to the country's heritage. The charges were confirmed to the press by a member of the junta police in Yangon.
The charge carries a jail term of five to ten years if convicted.
