LONDON, England: The UK's farming minister, Victoria Prentis, has called for an investigation into alleged theft by Russia of grain from Ukraine, the world's fourth-largest grains exporter.
During an International Grains Council (IGC) conference in London, Prentis said that she had heard of allegations of grain thefts by Russia firsthand from sources in Ukraine's southern region of Kherson, describing them as very serious.
Russia has previously denied charges that it has stolen Ukrainian grain.
Both the United Nations (UN) and Turkey are attempting to broker a deal to enable Ukrainian grain to be shipped from ports such as Odesa, but Russia stressed that Western sanctions must be lifted as part of a deal.
However, the prospects for a successful deal are slim, as both sides are blaming the other for disrupting global food supplies.
Kyiv and the West accuse Russia of weaponizing food supplies, while Moscow claims Ukrainian mines in Black Sea waters and international sanctions against it are to blame.
Russia was shipping stolen grain to Turkey out of Crimea, which it annexed in 2014, Ukraine said last week. It also accused Russia of sending 100,000 tons of stolen Ukrainian wheat to Syria.
The reputation of Russian companies would be damaged for years by attempts to trade in stolen grain, said Ukraine's deputy economy minister Taras Kachka during the conference.
