KATHMANDU, Nepal - A cop beat up a doctor on Sunday around 8:30 p.m., allegedly because the doctor was "walking at night."
Dr. Kul Bahadur Ghising was walking back to his apartment in Kusunti on Sunday night after finishing his shift at the Arogya Foundation in Pulchowk.
On the way, he was approached by a traffic constable from the Lalitpur Police Circle. According to Ghising, the traffic cop beat him black and blue after questioning the doctor about why he was walking at night.
"The constable punched me on the nose and then proceeded to attack me indiscriminately," Ghising, 31, told the press over the phone from Alka Hospital on Tuesday afternoon. "I even showed him my ID card and said I was walking home from the hospital." But he yelled at me and asked why I was out walking at night."
Ghising stated that he was alone and unable to retaliate.
Senior traffic officials admitted the incident. The constable reported the incident to the department, claiming that the altercation erupted after Ghising attempted to record a video on his cell phone.
According to the Lalitpur Metropolitan Police Range, an internal investigation has been launched.
"After the investigation is complete, police will take departmental action."
Ghising denies the constable's claim that he was filming the altercation. "When the cop began verbally and physically abusing me, I took out my phone to call for help." "I wasn't filming, as the cops claimed," Ghising said.
