DHAKA, Bangladesh - Tarique Rahman's support for Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib's killers has been criticized by Sheikh Hasina. The murderers of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman demonstrate that BNP founder Gen Ziaur Rahman and his wife Khaleda Zia were involved in the August 15 massacre, it has been claimed.
"Tarique Zia's support for the killers of 1975 has proven that they were involved in the assassination or conspiracy to kill Bangabandhu," the prime minister said at an event commemorating the Awami League's 73rd founding anniversary.
"It was Ziaur Rahman who passed the Indemnity Ordinance, which allowed the killers of Bangabandhu to escape justice and then rewarded them with jobs at various embassies."
According to Hasina, the phrase "defeated forces of 1975" in slogans by BNP Acting Chairman Tarique implicates his parents as "agents" of Pakistan, who wanted to subvert the ideals of Bangladesh's independence struggle and erase Bangabandhu's name from history.
"They [the BNP] do not share the spirit of the Liberation War. They oppose Bangladesh's status as an independent country. They enjoy being subjugated, "Hasina stated.
The Awami League chief also reacted angrily to the BNP's claims that the government was impeding Tarique's return to the country.
"Leaders of the BNP should remember that Tarique signed an agreement with the caretaker government in 2007 declaring his retirement from active politics. On this condition, he was released from jail and fled the country."
