MANDALAY, Myanmar - On Wednesday, Junta authorities arrested three more Mandalay-based lawyers representing political detainees after leaving their clients' hearings in Obo Prison
Thuta, Thae Su Naing, and her husband Tin Win Aung have been identified as the detainees.
Three of their local colleagues confirmed their arrests to the press under anonymity. At the time of reporting, it was unclear where they were being held in junta custody or why they had been singled out.
"We don't know the specifics of their arrests." "I only heard Thuta's car was also seized," one of the lawyers said.
Following the February 2021 military coup, lawyers representing imprisoned activists and political opponents of the military faced threats to their safety for questioning the practice of arbitrary detentions in a junta-controlled judiciary.
While the total number of lawyers detained in the country is unknown, attorneys in Mandalay reported that at least ten of their colleagues had been arrested since the coup, and military authorities wanted dozens more.
Following the wave of arrests, lawyers for junta opponents are reportedly reluctant to attend their clients' hearings.
