KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - After almost four years, the Bangladesh High Commission in Malaysia on Tuesday welcomed the first group of Bengali laborers to Malaysia.
On an AirAsia flight that arrived in Kuala Lumpur in the morning, 53 personnel touched down.
"Maintain the honor of the country and work in compliance with the rules of Malaysia," said Md Golam Sarwar, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Malaysia, while greeting the expats at the airport. "We'll stand by your side constantly." He added.
According to a statement from Malaysia's Minister of Human Resources, Datuk Seri M Saravanan, "the first group entered in December under the agreement. They were welcomed by the Bangladeshi High Commissioner and will work in the manufacturing industry."
The Bureau of Manpower, Employment, and Training (BMET) anticipates sending 600,000 to 800,000 migrant workers to Malaysia in the upcoming six months.
The migrant employees would have a three-year contract and get a monthly pay of Tk32,000 in factories.
The Malaysian government has agreed to allow Bangladeshis to apply for jobs in all industries, including construction, mining, domestic services, manufacturing, and plantations.
Currently, between 200,000 and 300,000 illegal Bangladeshis are residing in Malaysia. Malaysia halted importing Bangladeshi labor in 2018.
