KARACHI, Pakistan - The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning regarding the Biparjoy cyclone, which poses a potential threat to the coastlines of Pakistan and neighboring India.
In a statement released on Friday, the Met Office confirmed that the intensity of the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) Biparjoy remains unchanged. The cyclone has been gradually moving north-northeast over the past 12 hours and is currently located at Latitude 14.8N and Longitude 66.5E, approximately 1,120 km south of Karachi.
According to the PMD, the maximum sustained surface winds near the cyclone's center range from 130 to 150 km per hour, with gusts reaching 160 km per hour.
The environmental conditions in the area, including a sea surface temperature of 30-32C, low vertical wind shear, and upper-level divergence, are favorable for the further intensification of the cyclone.
Due to a shift in upper-level steering winds, there is uncertainty in the track forecast of the cyclone, as indicated by various global models. Some models suggest that the hurricane may move towards the Oman-Pakistan western coast, while others predict it to head towards the Indian Gujarat-Pakistan Sindh coast.
Given this uncertainty, the Met Office expects the cyclone to continue tracking north/northeastward over the next two days. The PMD's cyclone warning center in Karachi is closely monitoring the situation.
As a precaution, fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the open sea from Monday, June 12, until the cyclone passes. The Arabian Sea conditions are expected to become highly rough and accompanied by high tides along the coast.
Considering the probable northeast track of the cyclone, the Sindh-Makran coast is likely to experience rain, thunderstorms, heavy falls, and stormy winds, from the night of June 13 until the morning of June 14.
The sea conditions around the cyclone's center are very high, with maximum wave heights reaching 25-28 feet.
