Legal gridlock: Law Ministry firm on decision against sending Khaleda Zia abroad

According to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, there is no way to change the decision to send BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia abroad for treatment after the Law Ministry's advice.
"Because there are legal complications here, I sent the letter to the Law Ministry for their opinion...It is not possible, according to the Law Ministry.
The home minister said this in response to questions from journalists at the secretariat on Monday.

DHAKA, Bangladesh - According to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, there is no way to change the decision to send BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia abroad for treatment after the Law Ministry's advice.

"Because there are legal complications here, I sent the letter to the Law Ministry for their opinion...It is not possible, according to the Law Ministry. "I don't think there's anything else we can do now," he said.

The home minister said this in response to questions from journalists at the secretariat on Monday.

On Sunday, The Law Ministry stated that Khaleda Zia could not be sent abroad for treatment.

"Our legislative and judicial branches are completely separate." We do not have authority in that place. "I just informed you of the law ministry's opinion in response to their petition," he said.

In response to allegations that some Awami League leaders, including Haji Selim, used this facility (treatment abroad), the minister stated that Haji Selim has not been convicted. His trial is still ongoing.

When asked about the BNP's statement that they will not seek permission from the police to hold future events, Asaduzzaman Khan responded, "They do many things that are illegal and cause public suffering." That has already been witnessed. They held a rally in front of Abudharr Ghifari College, blocking all roads without police permission."

"We recommend that everyone follow the law. We will cause public suffering if we do not follow the law. And if public suffering worsens, our law enforcement team will act accordingly," he said.
