KACHIN, Myanmar - The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) has taken another junta stronghold in Bhamo, a district-level town in Kachin State where the armed group has been fighting for the past two months.
Colonel Naw Bu, KIA spokesman, told the press that the KIA and its allies took Artillery Battalion 366 headquarters Sunday evening.
He further confirmed that strikes continue on the neighboring 21 Military Operations Command (MOC) headquarters.
"Fighting continues inside the 21 MOC, in the nearby area," Naw Bu stated.
Zin Yaw, a junta defector and former captain, claimed that Artillery Battalion 366 was one of the strongest junta positions in Bhamo. Now, it will be easier to capture the 21 MOC.
He said: "When the 21 MOC falls, just Infantry Battalion 47 will remain. The KIA and its allies can employ captured weaponry and armored vehicles to combat the remaining troops. "When the MOC falls, the remaining bases will crumble quickly."
The KIA and its allies seized Bhamo's airfield and Armored Battalion 7006 in late January.
According to Zin Yaw, the other locations in the junta power center are smaller combat support units with family members armed as auxiliary forces.
Bhamo is second only to Kachin State's capital, Myitkyina, and is close to the KIA's Laiza headquarters. Since the combat in Bhamo began in December, the regime has launched six airstrikes on Laiza.
Bhamo, which is accessible by road and the Irrawaddy River, has now been besieged, forcing the regime to resupply its troops via aircraft.
