KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Xinhua) -- All government training and research institutions will be required to provide training programs in emerging fields for selected Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students beginning July, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Saturday.
In line with this aspiration, the country's civil service has been instructed to coordinate the initiative to further enhance the skills of TVET students nationwide, Anwar said in his speech at a ceremony to mark the National TVET Day 2026.
Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said at least 50 to 100 TVET students at each selected institution will be given early training opportunities in emerging and high-technology fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) and cryptology with an allocation of 50 million ringgit (12.4 million U.S. dollars) from the High-Impact Program under the Skills Development Fund Corporation to fund these activities.
"We are aware of the new technological changes that have been mentioned, including AI, crypto and the energy transition. All of these demand new areas of expertise that were beyond the imagination and reach of our generation 20 to 30 years ago," he said.
He added that the success of these programs requires strong support and commitment from the private sector, in addition to the involvement of government-linked companies.
