DUBLIN, Ireland: European dignitaries will receive woolen scarves worth 135,000 euros in total, paid for by the government, when Ireland takes on the EU presidency later this year.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said in a request for tender that it wants to pay for 4,500 woolen scarves with a uniquely Irish artistic character, costing 30 euros each, the Irish Examiner reported.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is looking for a supplier who can deliver the scarves in about nine months.
"The provision of mementos is an opportunity to strengthen goodwill between colleagues and to promote domestic craftsmanship internationally, promoting the cultural identity of the host country and strengthening economic and cultural links," the Department of Foreign Affairs said.
From July 1, Ireland will take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first time since 2013.
During the six-month term, Ireland will lead the council's work by guiding discussions, advancing legislation, and setting priorities for the European Union.
Hosting the presidency will cost the country a lot of money because Ireland must organize many important international meetings and pay for security during the period, according to the Irish Examiner.
Ireland's foreign minister, Helen McEntee, said the government is working to ensure everything is in place for the upcoming responsibilities.
She said the presidency also gives Ireland a chance to start a broader national discussion about the country's role in the European Union and the advantages of EU membership.
McEntee added that programs such as the Presidency County Pairings and activities for young people and schools will help people across the country take part in the presidency and discuss Ireland's place in Europe.
